What Is SSAE 16?

SSAE 16 is the Statement on Standards for Attestation Engagements No. 16. It is both a set of standards and guidance for applying them. The Auditing Standards Board (ASB) of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) developed SSAE 16. ‘s Auditing Standards Board (ASB). The AICPA also oversees the System and Organization Controls (SOC) framework. This framework defines the controls and policies you need for compliance with SOC1, SOC 2 and their variants.

Auditors use such standards to help with discovery of controls at a business, and when creating certain SOC reports. Specifically, SSAE 16 guidance helps auditors craft SOC 1 audit reports, and track changes in reported controls over time. Both auditors and business leaders also use this and other standards to achieve and demonstrate compliance with regulations. SSAE 18 has largely superseded SSAE 16.
